Health care: Tell the Senate no, we will sue

By: Devvy
November 12, 2009

Past and present members of Congress and cabinet members, have made it perfectly clear the U.S. Constitution means nothing. It is merely a prop and no longer of any concern to them. Here are but a few examples:

“The dirty little secret is that both houses of Congress are irrelevant…America’s domestic policy is now being run by Alan Greenspan and the Federal Reserve and America’s foreign policy is now being run by the International Monetary Fund [IMF].” And, “…when the president decides to go to war, he no longer needs a declaration of war from Congress.” Robert Reich, former Secretary of Labor under Marxist Bill Clinton, January 7, 1999, USA Today

At the time of Bush’s invasion of Iraq, CFR point dog in the House, Rep. Henry Hyde, [R-Il] stated that “declaring war is anachronistic, it isn’t done anymore…” During the same time period, darling of the deaf, dumb and blind “liberals,” Ranking Minority Member Tom Lantos, [D-Ca] called the declaration of war “frivolous and mischievous.”

Judge Andrew Napolitano, November 6, 2009 : “When I recently asked Congressman James Clyburn, the third ranking Democrat in the House, to tell me “Where in the Constitution the federal government is authorized to regulate everyone’s health care–, he replied that most of what Congress does is not authorized by the Constitution, but they do it anyway. There you have it. Congress recognizes no limits on its power. It doesn’t care about the Constitution, it doesn’t care about your inalienable rights, it doesn’t care about the liberties protected by the Bill of Rights, it doesn’t even read the laws it writes.”

Marxist Pelosi’s office actually issued a press release that compares this illegal, grotesque no ‘reform’ health care as comparable to automobile insurance – which of course, is the domain of the states: “On the shared responsibility requirement in the House health insurance reform bill, which operates like auto insurance in most states, individuals must either purchase coverage (and non-exempt employers must purchase coverage for their workers) – or pay a modest penalty for not doing so. The bill uses the tax code to provide a strong incentive for Americans to have insurance coverage and not pass their emergency health costs onto other Americans – but it allows them a way to pay their way out of that obligation. There is no constitutional problem with these provisions.”

I’ve got news for Nancy Pelosi: There is a BIG constitutional problem. You people have crossed over to what can only be defined as treason. Open and in our face treason.

The outlaws in the House of Representatives who voted for the monstrous, grotesque no reform health care taxing scheme last week, just automatically assume (including Republicans) that we the people will do nothing except wring our hands and weep. That after the Senate passes some form of another junk bill, we the people will hold our nose and eat it.

Wrong. Just because the Outlaw Congress passes a bill and the usurper in the White House signs it, doesn’t mean it is constitutional:

“The highest law of the land is the Constitution of the United States. The general misconception is that any statute passed by legislators bearing the appearance of law constitutes the law of the land. The United States Constitution is the supreme law of the land, and any statue must be in agreement with it to be valid. It is impossible for both the Constitution and a law violating it to be valid; one must prevail over the other. The Sixteenth American Jurisprudence, (2nd ed., Section 256), states:

“The general rule is that an unconstitutional statue, though having the form and name of law, is in reality no law, but is wholly void and ineffective for any purpose; since unconstitutionality dates from the time of its enactment and not merely from the date of the decision so branding it. A void act cannot be legally consistent with a valid one. An unconstitutional law cannot operate to supersede any existing valid law. Indeed, insofar as a statute runs counter to the fundamental law of the land, it is superseded thereby.” Stephen K. Huber, Professor of Law, University of Houston
Sen. Reid and his co conspirators will try to shove some version of health care tyranny forward. The Republicans will play along with it by trotting out some form of ‘compromise’ instead of standing up and saying we have no legal authority to enact any of this legislation. If they did so, it would really shut down the process and force a show down — a constitutional show down. But, no, the Republicans are gutless and instead, will go along with crafting their version of unconstitutional. Ron Paul does have a few bills that are meant to ‘help’ out the situation; I’ll send those out in an email alert in the next few days.

While the bills are being cooked up in the Senate, now is the time to take this by the legal horns or some version of the junk will end up on the usurper’s desk. In other words, not just holding signs or sending emails. These socialists, communists and political whores in Congress need to be told that we the people will bury the government in lawsuits if any of these bills pass and are signed into “law.”

The only reason this disaster continues to roll forward is because Reid, Pelosi – the whole bunch of them are so arrogant, they believe we will simply roll over. Just like Americans have been doing for decades. The defeatist attitude. In columns and on radio shows, I cite court cases that are victories for freedom and liberty and the email pours in: The courts are corrupt. Why bother with these bad judges?

Well, yeah, we have activist judges who should have been booted from the bench. But, we also have case law on the books that favors the Constitution and know what? Those cases didn’t get won by themselves. There had to be plaintiffs willing to take on the corrupt government. That’s how you win, not more complaining.

Who knows what the senate’s version of the Bill from Hell will look like, but now is the time for individuals, health care providers and businesses let their U.S. Senator know we will not comply. How hard is that?

I have cited these cases over the years and this goes to health care providers. Probably not Kaiser, Blue Cross/Blue Shield and the other big HMOs. It appears they have cut deals with the devil and care nothing about the U.S. Constitution. However, all other health care providers: Congress has ZERO authority to dictate how you practice medicine and deal with your patients:

In Linder v. United States, 268 U.S. 5, 18, 45 S. Ct. 446 (1925), The court ruled: “Obviously, direct control of medical practice in the of states is beyond the power the federal government.”

In U.S. v. Anthony, 15 Supp. 553, 555, (S.D. Ca., 1936) and U.S. v. Evers, 453 F. Supp. 1141, 1150 (M.D. Ala., 1978), the court ruled: “…The direct control of medical practice has been left to the states.”

I can tell you the bill passed by the outlaws in the House has dozens and dozens of sections that are clearly in violation of what the courts have already struck down.

For employers: It isn’t your legal obligation to provide health care to employees. Stand up and fight this Fascism:

Railroad Retirement Board, supra, 295 U.S., at 368, that Congress had no authority to establish a retirement scheme through its most tremendous power, its control over interstate commerce:

“The catalogue of means and actions which might be imposed upon an employer in any business, tending to the satisfaction and comfort of his employees, seems endless. Provision for free medical attendance and nursing, for clothing, for food, for housing, for the education of children, and a hundred other matters might with equal propriety be proposed as tending to relieve the employee of mental strain and worry. Can it fairly be said that the power of Congress to regulate interstate commerce extends to the prescription of any or all of these things? Is it not apparent that they are really and essentially related solely to the social welfare of the worker, and therefore remote from any regulation of commerce as such? We think the answer is plain. These matters obviously lie outside the orbit of congressional power.”

Got that, Congress?

The nonsense that continues to be regurgitated by the lazy media that if you don’t purchase health insurance the federal government somehow has the authority to fine and/or jail you — I say BULL. I believe this individual “mandate” would be struck down by the courts if properly challenged. Neither the commerce or taxing clause would rescue this bill from being struck down by the courts:

“The other obvious alternative is to use Congress’s power to tax and spend. In an effort, perhaps, to anchor this mandate in that power, the Senate version of the individual mandate envisions that failure to comply would be met with a penalty, to be collected by the IRS. This arrangement, however, is not constitutional either.” In that column, these lawyers touch on exactly what Comrade Pelosi thinks she can get away with and that’s tying health insurance to commerce and trying to extort the money from we the people using IRS thugs and jail to scare everyone. Is it any wonder Pelosi is despised by millions of Americans?
Comrade Obama/Soetoro also thinks that’s a great plan. Fine my subjects!!!.

Really, Barry? In over 230 years, the federal government has never forced Americans to buy any product or service and now, not only does the Outlaw Congress want to do so, we will be raped in taxes to pay for this monstrous failure in the making.

Are we going to take this or fight back? Are we doing to stop this so that no bill ever gets to the usurper’s desk?

Don’t wait and don’t use the holidays for an excuse not to act. Time is of the essence.

Employers: If you are a target of this legislation, now is the time to speak with others, join together and retain a good constitutional law firm that will file a lawsuit should a final bill become junk law. Multiple plaintiffs can really reduce the burden of legal costs.

Health care providers – corporations – you must do the same thing. I’ve read those sections of the House bill that set up more worthless paychecks to literally run medical practice inside the states of the Union. All of those health care providers out there that are against this massive take over and eventual collapse and destruction of health care – tell these arrogant power mad Senators that you will file lawsuits and will NOT comply with this unconstitutional shake down.

Individuals do the same: Hard copy letters to the U.S. Senate and tell them you will NOT comply. Send a very clear, very loud statement that no matter how many “versions” of this effort to hijack our health care system, Republican or Democrat, doesn’t matter: we will NOT allow this power grab and new taxing scheme. If it happens, every facet of the private sector will be opened up and targeted for destruction by Congress — mark my words. This will be just the beginning.

Tell them you will join with others (hopefully thousands) in filing lawsuits (using experienced, qualified law firms) to just say NO. We can defeat this once and for all. Not with holding signs or signing petitions, but telling these outlaws in the Senate that we will tie this “law” up in court for years. That we will not roll over any longer. We will fight in the courts and we will win.

Congress has NO authority whatsoever in any shape, form or clause to sell health insurance (just as unconstitutional as FEMA doing it for decades and getting away with it) and attempt to force individuals against their will to purchase it or extort money from them using threats of IRS thugs and jail time.

Burying Senators with snail mail letters will tell them that we the people, business and individuals, are willing to put our money towards hiring qualified legal teams to fight this disaster before it becomes another massive, entrenched failure like social security and Medicare. Before our rights are stripped away.

Threatening 1/3 of the senate with bouncing them out of office in November 2010 sounds nice, but that is a year from now. We must stop this from ever becoming “law” or we’ll have to aggressively go for the courts to gut as much as we can.

Besides, they don’t care any longer. These lawbreakers believe they are untouchable; crooks like John McCain and Lindsay Graham, who have sold out this country to every special interest group including ILLEGAL aliens.

Don’t forget those criminals by the tens of millions. The House version of the bill requires only a picture and social security number which can be bought off the street corner for about $20 bux in most cities. This will open the flood gates for TENS MILLIONS OF ILLEGALS to get in on the government scheme cooked up in that House bill. Does anyone see the reality of what we’re looking at? The Democrats will push hard to keep the language vague enough to allow tens of millions of illegals to lock into this massive rip off and simply suck us dry.

The Brady gun “law” was taken taken to court by two dedicated Americans at huge personal cost. They won. Had Richard and Jay not become the aggressors, there would be no Printz, Mack v. U.S. The same applies to U.S. v Lopez and other decisions in favor of the U.S. Constitution.

All these wins had plaintiffs or defendants that were willing to fight, not surrender.

This allegedly, supposedly is the version voted on by the House of Outlaws. Of course, Pelsoi and her comrades lie every time they open their mouth, so who knows what final text was voted on last Saturday night. Allegedly, supposedly, there isn’t any bill yet from the Senate. But since they’re all professional liars, I have no doubt their high paid lawyers are busy right this minute. What — you think mush heads like Max Baucus, Carl Levin, Maria Cantwell, or Patty Pancake Murray write these bills? Please.

The important thing now is action by the three groups: Individuals, health care providers no matter your specialty and employers. We the people must make the Senate understand we mean business. So much pressure that in the end, they make up some political excuse and no bill will surface that “reconciles” with the mess passed by the House. Kill it once and for all. Otherwise, it’s the hard route and off to court.

Stock buying and trading as an addiction Friday, Nov 13 2009

Stock buying and tradiind as an addiction? Tags: earning money, entertainment value, person to person, stock trading, stock markets, buying stocks, medical studies, trading stocks, minimal effort, human brain, addictive nature, disparities, passing time, alcohol drugs, brain imaging, monetary rewards

What makes the stock market addicting? Easy. See answer above.

Although stock trading and gambling have as many disparities as they have commonalities, the comparison is entirely legitimate. Both deal with playing with money and both deal with risks. Both also have hope and fear components which often lead to addiction.

According to Paul Ashe, president of the National Council on Problem Gambling, the most gambling performed in the world is performed in the stock markets.

The active investor’s addiction to trading is as strong as any form of addiction. Like gambling, active investing can be extraordinarily exciting for investors who, in turn, get carried away by winning.

Even medical studies confirm the release of the chemical, dopamine, when presented with the opportunity of a rising stock. The powerful allure of monetary rewards leads to the overwhelming urge of trading stocks.

It has been shown through brain imaging studies that the human brain treats the prospect of big profits the same way as the addictive nature of gambling, alcohol, drugs and other addictions.

So what specifically makes stock trading addicting? The reasons may actually be a lot more and may differ from person to person but the following can be considered true with most cases.

a.) Control. Investors appreciate the control they have over their situation and the freedom of making decisions for themselves in terms of trading and buying stocks.
b.) Excitement. Like gambling, trading provides a certain level of excitement by making decisions and risks for the sake of a good return in investment. The more risk they take, the bigger potential for profit, the greater excitement it gives.

c.) Easy return of profit. Casino gambling, lottery, raffle draws provide people a quick and easy way of earning money with minimal effort. This is true for stock trading as well.
d.) Game. Active investors see trading as a game. It has entertainment value, a means of passing time, and the component of winning and losing.
e.) Perpetuation. The problem with addictions such as gambling and active trading is the pitfall of perpetuation. As investors earn more profit with every stock trade, the more they are encouraged to continue trading, and at times investing more and more money. And with every loss, there is the desire to reverse the loss by intensifying their trading.

Investing via the stock market is a good way to grow your finances. But this should be coupled with the responsibility of keeping yourself in check before you cross the line into addiction.

What am I addicted to? Wednesday, Nov 11 2009

Food wise my addiction is frozen strawberries in sugar. the orange doritos. what else?

my addiction

Admit it. There must be something. Addiction may sound like a strong word, something we tend to associate with hard drugs or alcoholism, but in reality we all have addictions. Some of us are addicted to overeating, others to surfing the internet or watching television. Some of us are addicted to shopping or overworking. The form our addictions take may change, but in reality all addictive behavior stems from the same need: the need to distract ourselves from what we are feeling inside.

Audit the Fed Sunday, Nov 8 2009

From Ron Paul

Dear Friend of Liberty,

I hope you join me in my firm conviction that now is the time to fight back against the out of control Federal Reserve and continued Wall Street plundering of our tax dollars.

The threat isn’t hard to see — just look all around us. Our constitutional principles and freedoms are being assaulted at every turn. More bailouts, trillion dollar “stimulus” plans, huge new debt burdens for our children, simply printing money to cover our failed policies — I could go on and on. You and I both know that President Obama is going to keep going and going unless someone puts a stop to the madness.

But the good news is there is a way to fight back. And that fight starts today — by “Auditing the Fed” and showing the American people just how the Fed has abused its power, debauched the dollar, and helped strangle our economy.

Because I know you are a friend in Liberty, I wanted you to be among the first people contacted by Campaign for Liberty for the vital fight against the out of control Federal Reserve.

Please read the enclosed letter from my friend and Campaign for Liberty’s President, John Tate. John isn’t just a friend of mine. He’s also a patriot with years of experience getting things done in politics. Now he’s agreed to take up the fight in a way I cannot — by leading the fight for Liberty on the outside, while I do battle in the halls of Congress.

I trust you’ll find this battle to expose the out of control Fed worth your support.

For Liberty,

Congressman Ron Paul

auditfed

Dear Friend of Liberty,

Trillions of dollars are being stolen from the U.S. taxpayer.

Right now, you and I are seeing the worst plundering of a country’s wealth in the history of civilization, led by an out of control Federal Reserve.

But together you and I CAN put a stop to it all.

With your help (including submitting the petition linked below to your Congressman and Senators) today, Representative Ron Paul, Senator Jim DeMint and Campaign for Liberty are ready to fight back, by taking the battle straight to the heart of the problem – the Federal Reserve itself.

Just think about the scope of the problem for a minute: The massive, outrageous amount of dollars committed to the economic bailouts in recent months totals:

More than the socialist New Deal … More than the entire Iraq debacle … More than the 1980’s savings and loan mess … More than the Korean War …

COMBINED.

When will it all end?

It’s time you and I put a stop to a renegade Federal Reserve by exposing the Fed’s out of control actions to the American people. And Congressman Ron Paul and Senator Jim DeMint have a bill before Congress to do just that, known as the “Audit the Fed” Bill (HR 1207 and S 604).

That’s why it’s vital you click here to submit your “Audit the Fed” petition in support of Congressman Paul’s bill.

You see, Audit the Fed already has almost 300 cosponsors!

Now is the time to make sure your Congressman and Senators feel the heat to support the Audit the Fed bill!

If you and I don’t act today, I’m afraid this crisis will end with the economic ruin of every man, woman and child in America.

Today, nearly 13 TRILLION in taxpayer dollars in bailouts and loans has been agreed to by Congress, the Bush and Obama Treasury Departments, and the out of control Fed.

So is it really any wonder more and more folks are starting to realize the Washington, D.C. establishment is hurtling us toward complete economic disaster?

Whether it’s watching a phony “stimulus” package get rammed into law or watching Congress pass a $700 BILLION bank “bailout” under threat of martial law, the American people are agitated and increasingly angry.

That means it’s a perfect time to unleash the pressure of MILLIONS of outraged Americans on the out of control Fed!

So please click here to sign the petition linked below urging your Congressman and Senators to cosponsor and seek roll call votes to pass the Audit the Fed Bill!

As I know you’re aware, the Federal Reserve is shrouded in secrecy. Their meetings are off-limits to the public. Their inner workings are off-limits to the public.

And just recently, the Federal Reserve told Congress “NO WAY” when asked to account for $2 TRILLION in taxpayer-backed loans!

Well, why do you think they refused?

They know coming clean with Congress and the American people on how they doled out that two TRILLION dollars would result in an anti-Fed firestorm.

So can you imagine the impact of a full-scale audit? You and I will finally be able to show the American people that the Federal Reserve System leads to:
*** Constant economic crises — the housing crisis and the resulting chaos is just one example of an economic bubble created by centrally-planned interest rates and money manipulation;

*** The destruction of the middle class — as fuel, food, housing, medical care and education costs soar, everyone who is NOT on the government dole is forced to make do with less as the value of their money slowly decreases;

*** Currency destruction — history shows us that riots, violence and full-scale police states can result when people finally realize our money isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on and REFUSE to accept it.
And unless you and I do end the madness in Washington, D.C., we may be closer than we’d like to think to learning that history lesson firsthand — right here in our own streets.

That’s why your commitment to helping pass the Audit the Fed Bill –- and helping Campaign for Liberty fight this battle — is so vital.

Just a few months ago, there was no chance of passing any legislation like the Audit the Fed Bill. So I guess there has been one “CHANGE.”

You see, with the piling up of trillions of dollars in out of control “bailouts” of Wall Street and international bankers, even many politicians in Washington want to show you they’re “being responsible.”

What better way for Congress to do this than by auditing the Federal Reserve to account for the trillions stolen from the U.S. taxpayers?

More and more Congressmen are already feeling the pressure and are signing up to support this bill. I’ve even received word this bill could move in the next few weeks in the U.S. House.

When that happens, you and I must be ready to fight.

And, it’s both a bill we CAN pass, and one that is vital to exposing the massive corruption and dollar manipulation at the Federal Reserve.

You see, after regulating, taxing, spending, borrowing and printing us into what looks like the worst recession in decades, establishment politicians and power brokers are assuring us they’re working hard to “fix” our economic woes. What is their solution? You guessed it. More of the same!

And even if the Audit the Fed Bill is defeated this time, just forcing a vote is a win/win situation.

Can you imagine how many politicians will pay the price at the ballot box in 2010 when you and I tell the American people their Congressman somehow lost trillions of taxpayer dollars and refused to even LOOK for it?

Now we just need to show Congress the American people demand action on the Audit the Fed Bill. Here’s how we plan to do that.

First, we’re already busy contacting up to five million activists nationwide through mail, phones and email to generate petitions to the U.S. Congress demanding action on Ron Paul’s Audit the Fed Bill.

But that’s just the beginning. We’ll work the talk radio stations and grant local media interviews to ratchet up the pressure even further on Congress.

And a few days before the vote, if we have the resources, we’d also like to run hard-hitting targeted radio, TV and newspaper ads.

This entire program is designed to send this one, CLEAR message to Congress: Any politician who votes against the Federal Reserve Audit should look for another job.

But such a massive effort won’t be easy — or cheap.

So in addition to submitting your petition, I also hope you’ll agree to make a contribution of $1000, $500, $250, or $100 to Campaign for Liberty.

If $100 is too much to ask right now, please make a contribution of $50 or even $25 today. Every dollar will help, and every dollar will go to this vital fight.

I know times are hard, but if we don’t take action, the America we see in just a few years could look far worse than even the one we see today.

Can I count on you to join the fight to AUDIT THE FED by clicking here to sign the petition, and by making a generous contribution of $1000, $500, $250, $100, $50 — or whatever you can afford — to Ron Paul’s Campaign for Liberty?

Sincerely,

John F. Tate
President

P.S. Please submit the petition urging your Congressman and Senators to cosponsor and seek roll call votes on Rep. Ron Paul’s Audit the Fed Bill TODAY!

ZODIACAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR TODAY
Positions of the planets and luminaries today at noon GMT (7 a.m. EST):

Today’s Horoscopes

ARIES (March 21-April 19): You want to be self-reliant, which is mostly a cover for being distrustful. You must reach out and work with partners but exercise both caution and tact.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You are apt to make snap judgments about people, when you actually need to study them at length. You can impose too much prejudice on people, when you need to understand them individually.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): You feel rushed, possibly because you feel you have a lot of catching up to do. Mistakes have to be corrected. No matter how desperate you feel, it’s important to be slow and thorough.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): You feel that there is a lot of work you alone can do. External obstructions reflect your inner rigidity. Be more flexible about something you feel is getting in your way and the right answer will appear.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): You are liable to express your opinion too readily and too loudly. You need to think long and hard before speaking out. Snap judgments, off the cuff remarks can be injurious.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You want to make quick replies or put a product out the door. It’s more important, in most instances, to take time to do research, to fact-check, to proofread one last time. It’s more important to be right than to be first.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): If you are feeling frustrated and blocked, look beyond personal gain. What can you do to build stability and reliance for others and for society in general? That will bring satisfaction.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): While you are able to take an objective view of people and problems, it’s likely to come out in a sarcastic, irreverent manner. Avoid gossip and indirect criticism. Be helpful to the person involved.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You have an overview of people and events than can be expressed in dry humor or sarcasm. It’s important to have a point to your criticisms. Don’t complain or criticize over small matters.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): You are working through disappointment. A big sense of self-reliance threatens to turn you cynical. Don’t turn away genuine help no matter how deep your mistrust.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You can see how people are interfering with your cherished goals. No matter how well-intentioned they may be, you and they are not going to agree, so you’d best assert your intentions first.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): It’s important that you stay above reproach. People may be making up gossip anyway but it’s best to ensure that there is no foundation to it to begin with. Avoid the appearance of impropriety.

Winter Depression (SAD) Starts Now: What to Do

posted by Mel, selected from Natural Solutions magazine Oct 31, 2009 5:01 pm

By Matthew Solan, Natural Solutions

For 12 years Helena Davis’ life resembled a light switch. When daylight-saving time arrived in spring, it flipped on–she felt energetic, focused, and active. In winter, however, it switched off. She struggled to do the simplest household chores. Her weight ballooned. She could go to work and function at some level, she says, but it was obvious that something was wrong. “All winter I felt like a slug moving around in peanut butter,” says Davis, now 64.

She finally realized that her mood change coincided with her move to upstate New York, an area with few sunny days. A visit to her doctor filled in the diagnosis: Davis was one of 10 million to 25 million Americans, 75 percent of whom are women, who suffer from a subtype of depression called seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

You’ve no doubt heard of SAD. Also called “winter blues,” it often gets mistaken for clinical depression as the two share many symptoms–sadness, anxiety, lethargy, lack of sleep, diminished sex drive, and increased appetite. The difference lies in their duration and severity, according to Norman Rosenthal, MD, author of Winter Blues: Everything You Need to Know to Beat Seasonal Affective Disorder (The Guilford Press, 2006). SAD typically strikes around September or October and then fades away in March and April. (Depression on the other hand can occur year-round.) Merely troublesome and potentially disruptive at first, SAD can be controlled if you take appropriate action, but “left unchecked, the changes in mood and behavior can become so powerful they can create significant problems in your life and may manifest into year-round major depression if not addressed,” says Rosenthal.

Light therapy
The primary cause of SAD is light deprivation, so light therapy ranks as the first line of defense. Light boxes contain white fluorescent bulbs behind a plastic UV filter, and regular use can reset your body clock and increase serotonin. Effective light boxes generate 10,000 lux (a measurement of intensity); to put that therapeutic amount in perspective, traditional lighting produces 300 to 500 lux, and the sun produces more than 100,000 lux on a bright summer day.

Rosenthal recommends using light therapy for about 20 minutes a day at first, ideally in the morning. How early depends on the individual’s body clock, says Michael Terman, PhD, who heads the Center for Light Treatment and Biological Rhythms at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York.

If you suffer from SAD, try placing a light box 1 to 3 feet away while you eat, read, go through your mail, or meditate. If your symptoms remain unchanged, increase your treatment to 45 minutes a day, says Rosenthal. Reevaluate your symptoms on a weekly basis and make adjustments. “You should feel the effects within two to four days,” says Rosenthal. “Almost everyone should feel the benefits within two weeks.” (Find light boxes at lightforhealth.com or litebook.com.) Brighten up your living and work space with full-spectrum light bulbs that closely match natural daylight.

Diet and exercise
Dietary changes also can ease SAD symptoms, says Chris Krumm, ND, LAc, of the Bastyr Center for Natural Health, near Seattle. For breakfast, Krumm advocates a high-protein meal to boost intake of tyrosine. “Consuming this amino acid in the morning helps boost your energy throughout the day,” he says. For dinner, Krumm suggests less protein and more carbohydrates like whole grains to help the brain synthesize serotonin. “In addition to improving your mood, increased serotonin may help people sleep better,” he says.

You may want to add more fish to your diet, too, especially cold water types like mackerel and salmon that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. People with depression often have low levels of omega 3s. A 2001 study found a correlation between increased fish consumption and decreased incidence of SAD in Iceland.

Davis has found that staying active in winter helps her feel less lethargic. She’s chosen a treadmill inside a brightly lit gym, but don’t be afraid to head outside. On bright afternoons, go for a long walk or run. Got more time? Climb on a bike or break out the skis. “You’ll get your required light exposure and also some exercise, which can help alleviate stress that may contribute to SAD-related depression,” says Rosenthal. Research in BMC Psychiatry found the combination of bright light exposure and aerobics reduced many depressive symptoms, especially those related to insomnia and other sleep problems.

Few do not form racial prejudices

U.S. researchers found just 7 percent of respondents do not have the usual human tendency to favor one’s own group and not form racial prejudices.

Their study, published in the journal Psychological Science, found the 7 percent of people that showed no racial bias differed from biased individuals in a fundamental way — they also were less likely to form negative emotional associations in general.

Robert Livingston of Northwestern University and Brian Drwecki of the University of Wisconsin asked white college students to do tasks that repeatedly paired unfamiliar Chinese characters with positive or negative images such as puppies or snakes. The results showed non-biased individuals were less likely than biased individuals to acquire negative emotions toward the character paired with negative pictures.

House Committee Investigates Jane Harman one of 30 representatives and several aides being investigated by the House Ethics Committee

Written by Jack Kenny Saturday, 31 October 2009 00:00 A House Democrat who once claimed to “live and breathe security” has been under investigation this year for allegedly promising to use her influence to gain leniency for two “pro-Israeli lobbyists” in exchange for support of her own effort to gain the chairmanship of the House Intelligence Committee, the Washington Post reported Friday. Rep. Jane Harman, an eight-term member from Venice, California is one of 30 representatives and several aides being investigated by the House Ethics Committee on issues that include defense lobbying and corporate influence peddling, according to the Post. She has come under the scrutiny of committee investigators due to wiretapped telephone conversations she had in 2005 with an “Israeli operative,” in which she allegedly offered to intervene on behalf of the accused lobbyists in exchange for help in getting the coveted committee chair. The Post did not identify the lobbyists or say what they were accused of, but a Los Angeles Times story earlier this year referred to reports that “Harman was heard on a wiretap speaking to a suspected Israeli agent about two AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) lobbyists accused of illegally passing classified information to foreign officials and reporters.” Harman has said she did not contact either the White House or the Justice Department about the two lobbyists. Federal prosecutors last April dropped charges against the former AIPAC lobbyists, the Times reported, saying that recent court rulings had made it unlikely they could win convictions. Harman had described the wiretaps as an abuse of government power, but sources told the Washington Post that it was not Harman’s phone that was tapped but that of the suspected Israeli agent with whom she conversed. In June of this year, a Justice Department official wrote a letter to Harman’s lawyer saying she was “neither a subject nor a target” of a criminal investigation, according to the Post story. But an April 20 New York Times report, based on statements from unnamed “current and former government officials,” said an official who had seen transcripts of several wiretapped calls described Harman as agreeing to intercede on behalf of the lobbyists in exchange for help in persuading party leaders to give her the chairmanship. The official said someone seeking help for the AIPAC lobbyists was recorded asking Harman, a longtime supporter of the organization, to intervene with the Justice Department. According to the official, Harman said she would have more influence with a White House official whom she did not identify. The caller reportedly promised her that media mogul Haim Saban, a wealthy California donor, would threaten to withhold campaign contributions to Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the likely Speaker when the Democrats regained control of Congress, if Pelosi would not appoint Harman chairman of the Intelligence Committee. Harman was the committee’s ranking Democrat at the time. According to the Times, Harman was one of the very few members of Congress with wide access to intelligence information, including information about wiretapping carried out by the Bush administration that came to light in December of 2005. She was “swept up” by National Security Administration eavesdropping, the paper said, citing “three current or former senior officials” as sources. Harman, 64, is a native of New York City, but grew up in Los Angeles. Her involvement in Democratic Party politics goes back to at least 1960, when, at age 15, she was an usher at the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. After Smith College and Harvard Law School, she worked in the U.S. Senate for Sen. John Tunney and for the Senate Judiciary Committee and worked in the White House during the presidency of Jimmy Carter. In 1979, she became a special counsel at the Pentagon. The following year, she married her second husband Sidney Harman, founder of the audio equipment company Harman International Industries. Harman is ranked among the richest members of Congress with a net worth of between $236 million to $558 million, according to her 2008 disclosure forms. She was first elected to Congress in 1992, when she ran on the slogan “Pro-choice, Pro-change.” She is described on the website WhoRunsGov.com as “progressive on social and women’s issues while being a fiscal conservative and a supporter of a strong national defense.” She served for three terms before leaving Congress to run for governor of California in 1998. In a three-way contest for the Democratic nomination, Harman ran against then-Lieutenant Governor Gray Davis and former airlines mogul Al Checchi. In a campaign notable for its spending spree, Harman put up $11.6 million of her own money, but was heavily outspent by Checchi, who went through $37 million of his fortune. Gray won the nomination and the election, while Harman garnered just 20 percent of the primary vote. In 2000, she left her teaching job at UCLA to run again for her former congressional seat. She won by less than two percentage points and went back onto the House Intelligence Committee, where she had become the top ranking Democrat by the time the party won back control of Congress in 2006. Harman, who once said, “I live and breathe security 24-7,” was eager to become the committee chairman. But according to media reports she had fallen out of favor with fellow Californian and soon-to-be- speaker Pelosi. Some attribute the disfavor to Harmon’s high visibility as another powerful Californian and natural rival to Pelosi. It may also have been due to political and ideological differences. Harman, who once claimed she was proud to be called “the best Republican in the Democratic Party,” is more conservative than most Democrats on military and foreign policy issues. She parted with Pelosi in voting for authorization of the Iraq War and later took heat from party members for being slow to criticize President Bush on the Iraq War and the administration’s domestic surveillance operations. When the Democrats took over the House, Harman was replaced on the Intelligence Committee by Texas Democrat Silvestre Reyes, but was assigned to the Committee on Homeland Security, where she now chairs the subcommittee on Intelligence, Information Sharing and Risk Assessment. According to the Post article, the House Ethics Committee on June 9 of this year authorized subpoenas to be issued to the Justice Department, the National Security Agency and the FBI for “certain intercepted communications” involving Harman. According to a former government official, the Justice Department declined to respond to the subpoena. Harman told the paper the ethics committee had not contacted her and that she has no knowledge that the subpoena was ever issued. “I don’t believe that’s true,” she said. “As far as I’m concerned, this smear has been over for three years.” The Post said a confidential report, prepared in July, on the committee’s investigation of Harman and other representatives and staff members “appears to have been inadvertently placed on a publicly accessible computer network, and it was provided to the Washington Post by a source not connected to the congressional investigations.” The paper described the Ethics Committee as “one of the most secretive panels in Congress, and its members and staff members sign oaths not to disclose any activities related to its past or present investigations.” The committee announced over the summer that it was reviewing lawmakers with connections to the now-closed PMA Group, a lobbying firm. But the document received by the Post shows the inquiry was broader than indicated, the paper said, and included a review of seven members the House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee who have steered federal money to the firm’s clients and have also received large campaign contributions. California Democrat Maxine Waters, a high-ranking member of the House Financial Services Committee, is among those under scrutiny concerning the relationship between their personal finances and their congressional activities. Waters, whose husband owns at least $250,000 worth of stock in OneUnited Bank of Massachusetts, arranged a September, 2008 meeting at the Treasury Department, where executives of that bank asked for government assistance. In December, OneUnited was among the first companies selected for the bank bailout program, receiving $12.1 million. House Ways and Means Chairman Charles Rangel acknowledged he spoke to committee staff members about a conference he and four other member of the Congressional Black Caucus attended last November in St. Martin. The three-day event at a luxury resort was underwritten by major corporations, including Citigroup, Pfizer, and AT&T. House rules adopted in 2007 forbid private companies from paying for congressional travel. Rangel said he has not discussed other parts of the investigation of his private finances with the committee. “I’m waiting for that anxiously,” he told the Post.
